CONFERENCE OPENING NIGHT
MAY 2004. Not every night starts with a bang. Most, however, end on a high. Our night out with the Association of Operating Department Practitioners was no exception.
The sound check rattled around the empty room, competing with the bullet-like sound of the torrential rain rattling against the windows on another typical May evening in South Wales. The barman stood idly at the bar, slowly repolishing the same glass. Our sound engineer stood in a slowly expanding pool of water, dripping continously from his trouser turn-ups, having been sent to the van to fetch the drummer's shoes. No-one had mentioned the icy sheets of rain lashing around Jurys Hotel in Cardiff city centre before he left. No-one mentioned it as he returned. The drummer was marginally grateful. The barman watched, silently.
Four people looked around the room, set for 350 people, undecided as to where to sit. They finally selecetd a strategic position: close to the bar, near the exit, a good view of the stage. They were ready to be entertained.
30 miles away, a romantically engaged couple stuggled through driving rain and howling gales, making their pilgrimage from Exeter to God's country.
The band burst into life. The lights buzzed, driving the condensation from the windows. The four were entertained. They clapped; more a duty than a will.
Fast forward two hours. 350 people crammed the room, packed dancing in the space recently occupied by one table, rolled efficiently to the side of the room. The lights cut irridescent shafts through the smoky haze. New condensation formed dewy shapes on the glass. At the back, the romantic couple enjoyed the first handful of numbers from the second set then ventured out into the night, mentally preparing themselves for the long return to Exeter. The barman was nowhere to be seen.
The band played on; off the end of the set list, past heady numbers repeated from the first half and well beyond the scheduled end. Even so, there was still one more drinking hour after the final chord - and just a few more hours before the conference opened again at 8.30am.
It's a true story. Our sparse audience grew to maximum through the night as delegates made their way to Jurys after changing, eating, doing business and the countless important things that happen at conferences. Many missed the first set; some missed most of the second. But those on the dance floor had a seriously good time - proving once again that medical staff know how to party. We hope they had as good a time with the other entertainment in conference week - the Ogmore Male Voice Choir at conference dinner and T-Rex on the penultimate night, playing on the same stage as Classic Soul Dogs.
And that couple from Exeter? Yes, Classic Soul Dogs are playing at their wedding reception in a marquee in the middle of July. [see Marquee 1 - Garden 0]
